About Amul

Amul is one of India’s most recognized dairy brands, with a history deeply connected to the country’s cooperative dairy movement. The brand is marketed by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), headquartered in Anand, Gujarat. Its cooperative system connects millions of milk producers with organized dairy processing, marketing and consumers.

Amul’s journey began in 1946, when the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union was established in Gujarat. The cooperative movement was led by Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel, with the objective of creating a system in which dairy farmers could work collectively and gain a stronger role in the milk supply chain.

A significant chapter in Amul’s development was shaped by Dr. Verghese Kurien. His contribution to cooperative dairy development and professional management played an important role in transforming India’s dairy sector. His work became closely associated with the White Revolution, which helped expand milk production and strengthen dairy cooperatives across India.

Technology and innovation were also important to this transformation. Dr. H. M. Dalaya contributed to dairy-processing technology, including the development of a method for producing skimmed milk powder from buffalo milk. These advances helped improve the ability to process, preserve and distribute milk and dairy products on a larger scale.

Over the decades, the cooperative model associated with Amul became an important example of farmer participation in the dairy industry. Dairy cooperatives across different regions adopted similar approaches, bringing together milk producers, processing facilities and organized markets.

Today, Amul offers a wide range of dairy products and has become a familiar name in households across India. Its cooperative network continues to connect milk producers with processing and distribution systems, creating a link between farmers and consumers.
